There's a whole industry known as "competitive intelligence" that has ethical guidlines. They aren't your Golden Rule. I wouldn't want my competitor to grab a brochure from my trade show booth, but that's far from unethical.

Competitive intelligence is essential for an efficient marketplace, helps drive innovation and differentiation, and is in the interests of customers.

HI CI Guy,

Thanks for taking the time to comment. I wasn't aware of industry standards relative to competitive intelligence. Standards can certainly help drive commonly accepted practices.

Are you aware of what the industry standards on competitive intelligence say relative to the use of covert corporate "spying"? Is it ever considered an acceptable practice to conduct covert activities for competitive intelligence purposes, even when the activity might be technically legal? Thanks!
